Dynamic Cloud Shadows, Not Really

    Shadows are nice to have. Even in a 2D game the sense of depth is important. So, I've implemented "dynamic shadows" for my clouds in order to create a more realistic effect. However, it's very basic in its approach. There is no light source that is used to calculate where the shadow should be. Instead, cloud shadow placement is based on game clock time. Again, not really dynamic shadows, just some simple math to make them "dynamic" based on the time of day.

Scale and Adding Depth

    Quite a few drastic changes have taken place over the past month. Some of them would be considered toss ups while others leave that uneasy feeling inside. The biggest decision being the scale of the art in AIA. A lot of thought has gone into whether more detail is needed or if the current designs and artwork will suffice. 

    For instance, our first approach doesn't allow game objects and buildings to express their details or animations as well as high resolution images but does add depth to the buildings.

UI Enhancements

    As mentioned in the our second dev update, the UI has received a major overhaul from a 1940s WWII color scheme to a more modern day design. It was very much needed in order to fit the general theme of the game, which we haven't really talked about yet. The new theme brings together a dark contrast from the in-game scenery, buildings, and map design while also allowing for a minimalist design.

    To spice up solo development, I've steered towards adding some sounds and music into AIA. This allows for skill diversification, a change of pace/workload, and the ability to give the game some life. It can get boring and tedious listening to your own music (especially if it's poorly made) or to not hear any sounds at all when testing, thus, taking this avenue conquers many different issues/concerns at the same time.

UI Implementation

    Over the last two months the UI has been completely changed from an arcade-like style to a more digital/clean look. This can be seen later via the Feedback UI but more will be shown in due time. Finding a proper theme for the UI took longer than expected. It never felt right until a balance was found that brought about the order of what intelligence agencies have and the the digital feel of the era. The game takes place in 2054 where the world has been ravaged by the nature of humans. With destruction at every turn, some civilizations have been able to rebuild their country anew.

    Development on AIA began early in 2021 with the desire to figure out a good baseline regarding art, the core theme and setting, game mechanics, and more. While art is arguably the most pivotal part, the decision to use pixel-art has come to a close. Through countless hours of research, months of design, and dozens of creations, I've come to a conclusion that pixel-art brings together the best market, skill set, and aesthetics to AIA.
